In spite of several serious challenges, I managed to complete my painting
for the "Scenes of Darley, pet cetera” which is now showing at the beautiful
Headley-Whitney Museum.

to travel in Kentucky.
I took this image on my way home after
joining other Kentucky artist, at the 'Darley at Gainsborough
Farm' photo shoot for the upcoming '2013 Freedom Fest', Woodford Humane Society's summer fundraiser event.
On May, 25, 2013 it was a beautiful spring day, and I was fortunate enough to take over 100 photos to work from. All I can say, "it must be like horse heaven to live in such a grand environment".
I learned that the Darely breeding operation currently stands stallions in seven countries around the world. The word impressive does not attempt to describe the entrances to the farm, the barns, the beautiful landscaping and mostly the magnificent horses! It was like a scene from a fabulous movie.

Amidst all the serenity and beauty, I also felt sadness.
For many years, I have advocated across Kentucky for people with serious 'untreated' mental
illness. (Sometimes individuals who lack insight to their
illnesses such as bipolar and schizophrenia, often end up homeless and lack access to treatment and
resources, due to Kentucky's failure to
provide adequate funding, treatment laws and the antiquated mental
health system overall!) The difference between these two worlds sometimes boggles my mind.
Please don't misunderstand my passion for people, as I love animals as well. As an artist, I feel privileged to participate in such a worthwhile
cause for the Woodford Humane Society.
Since I was a small child, I have sketched and painted horses, dogs and cats — so naturally participating in this event is perfect way to give to a incredible organization.
The Woodford Humane Society does not accept government funding and is completely
dependent on private contributions to continue
to provide care to 1,200 animals each year.
Since 2007, the Woodford Humane Society have placed 90% of our animals into their forever homes! The national average is around 25%.

This year, I considered having one of the photos enlarged and framed for my contribution. But at the last minute, I decided to create.
For several of my latest works, I have been painting on pages from vintage 1867 Cyclopidea-English literature book pages. I began
my process by using Golden Gel Medium to gently apply the pages to an
11"x14" canvas. Arranging and collaging pieces of vintage paper, isn't as simple as one
might think.
Later,
I looked through my photos and settled on a beautiful mare who
actually seemed to pose for me the day I visited the Darley Gainsborough Farm.
Located on the farm, were many beautiful garden designs. I was particularly fascinated by all the mature Ginkgo trees around the stallion's stables,
as well as the abundance of the Kousa Dogwoods on the Darley
Gainsborough property. I decided to add Ginkgo leaves to the painting to give my horse a theme. I called the mare "Ginkgo", because I couldn't read the name on her halter.
Matt, at Hobby Lobby gives Ginkgo Mare the finishes touches and a great frame.
